The word “ayurveda” is combination of āyus – which means “life,” “life principle,” or “long life” and veda - a system of “knowledge.” Together, you get the knowledge of life, the science of life.
For millions of people, healthcare means ayurveda. Their appreciation of ayurvedic medicine goes back five thousand years. Common to India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, ayurveda is now becoming better known and more popular in the West.
Medicinal properties of herbs and minerals are mentioned for the first time in Adarvaveda, one of the four Vedas, the books of wisdom of the ancient India. They are Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Adarvaveda. And all the traditional Indian sciences have their roots in the Vedas. In Adarvaveda, about 64 herbs are mentioned along with their therapeutic properties for the treatment of diseases and for maintaining the balance of the doshas - the three basic biological energies that form and guide our constitution.
Over the centuries, Aruyveda evolved into a full-fledged science of medicine or, to put it in a broader perspective, into an art of living healthy. Ayurveda is about living in harmony with the Universe, and observing its natural rhythms.
We read in the 2nd century B.C. text, the Charaka Samhita, that life is the combination of body, mind, and soul. And that ayurveda “is the most sacred science of life, beneficial to humans both in this world and the world beyond.” Sutrasthana, 1.42-43.

Ayurveda is a comprehensive and holistic way of looking at and treating the human condition. The “Sushruta Samhitā” was compiled in about 1000 BC by Sushrit, known as the Father of Surgery. The book addresses practices as complex as obstetrics, orthopedics and ophthalmology.
Ashtanga combines the eight branches of Ayurveda:
Internal medicine - Kayachikitsa
Surgery - Shalya Tantra
Ears, eyes, nose and throat - Shalakya tantra
Pediatrics - Kaumarabhritya Tantra
Toxicology - Agada Tantra
Purification of the genetic organs - Bajikarana (or Vajikarana) Tantra
Health and Longevity - Rasayana Tantra
Spiritual Healing/Psychiatry - Bhuta Vidya
Panchabhutas
The universe is composed of five fundamental elements - Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Ether - which are called the Panchabhutas.
Tridoshas
In the living body the five fundamental elements combine among themselves in differing ratios to form three basic principles - the Tridoshas. They are Vata - predominantly Air and Ether showing their characters; Pitta -predominantly Fire and Water showing their characters; and Kapha - pre-dominantly Earth and Water showing their characters.
Prakruti
Individuals are formed with unique combinations of the doshas, the parakruti. The prakruti is formed when the ovum and the sperm unites to form the new life. It is heavily dependent on the dosha combination: the kind of life, work, food, environment, etc of the parents.
Prakruti is a dynamic balance among the doshas. The physical and mental character of any living thing is determined by its prakruti.
